Every day is a fiesta in San Miguel (most nights, too.) At least that's what it feels like after a while. The cuetes (firecrackers) sometimes seem endless (malicious, even, at 5 am—perhaps part of some insidious insomniac conspiracy?) But hey, it's a happy place. Forget sleep. Get out and have some fun. (Or just bring earplugs.)

FYI: New Year's Eve in San Miguel is a blast, literally. Huge public fireworks and castillo display in the jardin—funny hats, giant sparklers and other festive fire hazards, dancing, drinking 'til quite early, etc. No invitation required. Just get there a bit before the witching hour to get a good spot. Sensible shoes are a very good idea.high season
