Since 2002, Casita de las Flores has been San Miguel de Allende's comfortable, affordable, friendly, and less stuffy alternative to expensive hotels and B&B's. The Casita is a charming little B&K (Bed and Kitchen) located in the Colonia Allende, a typical San Miguel residential neighborhood, just a 20-minute stroll from the historic Jardin, or town square, and a ten-minute walk from the Instituto Allende.
Based on the concept of the European "Pensione" or guest house, Casita de lasFlores is far more private than a hostel and yet more personal and much less expensive than a hotel. The kitchen and the bathrooms are shared, and it's not right in the center of town (which actually makes it quieter than many more centrally located places), but the Casita is clean, comfortable, pretty, and a very good deal. The city bus runs right outside our main gate and cabs are inexpensive and readily available, if you don't feel like walking.
We cater especially to travelers, adventurers and artists of all ages who are interested in visiting the real San Miguel de Allende, not a fancy gringo version of it. If this is you, the Casita is the perfect place to stay while pursuing yourinterests, be they Spanish, art, photography or jewelry classes, shopping at our great markets and boutiques, or just a relaxing vacation. Recently n
amed a Unesco World Heritage Site, San Miguel is one of Mexico's most exquisite and best-preserved historic colonial towns. But it's no stuffy museum or history lesson. San Miguel has a hopping nightlife and restaurant scene and offers more entertainment options than many much larger cities. (Please see our local resources and cool day trips pages for more on classes and other activities available in and around San Miguel.)
As most of our guests tell us, the Casita is special. It's far more than just a comfortable bed and a safe place to keep your gear. At the Casita, anything is possible—from brushing up on your Spanish before you've even brushed your teeth, to planning a last-minute dinner party with good friends you just met two days ago. Our spacious patio and bright kitchen / dining room provide comfy spots in which to hang out and read, write, do yoga, or get to know your neighbors. Privacy is there for the taking, but the Casita is a great place not to be alone. Be warned: people make friends here.
Each good-sized private room has a large screened window and French doors opening out onto the courtyard. Our two shared bathrooms are scrubbed daily and there's always hot water. Unlike a B&B, we do not serve breakfast, but you can make it (or lunch or dinner) any time you want. Our guest kitchen is fully equipped for your convenience. Please see our what's a B&K? page for more details.
Nestled at the end of a privada, or private walkway, the Casita is quite a peaceful place, full of plants, flowers and light. Trust us, around here,
tranquility can be elusive. (Subtle and silent are not adjectives normally used to describe day-to-day life in this country.) Mexico is a vibrant, boisterous, clamorous place, brimming with tastes, smells and sounds, with laughter, with life. Magically, the Casita is quite often so quiet that all you hear is birdsong and the occasional tinkle of the windchimes. But sometimes we, too, have to deal with the soundtrack of Mexico—a barking dog, a neighborhood teen's music, a rooster, children squealing. With one notable exception: traffic noise—we are mercifully far from the street.
We at the Casita take our job as vacational therapists™ very seriously, and we like to think we do a little bit of good in the world. We know that our guests generally come to escape the frenetic first world and to enjoy all San Miguel has to offer — to bask in our sun and slow pace, to indulge in artistic pursuits, to go to concerts and lectures, swimming or horseback riding, on field trips and adventures, and maybe even to do a little bit of nothing. We offer you a comfy home-away-from-home (or oasis, as we’ve been called) from which to do all of this, and more (or less), depending on your needs.
"Whatcha doing, Molly?" I once asked a guest as she lay in the hammock on a particularly blue-skied day, a week or so into her stay.
"Watching the laundry dry," she replied. I smiled. Another vacational therapy™ success story. Life is good.Casita guests (those who stay a while — whirlwind weekenders don’t much feel
the effects) generally leave recharged and refreshed, ready to tackle the first world once more (and perhaps ready to move a little more slowly within it). And, more often than not, when they leave, they take a few hugs and email addresses with them. Perhaps the best part of our work is that people make friends at the Casita, and return often. We hope you will join us. If you have any questions, or if you’d like to reserve, please send us an email.
